Acute care is a nursing specialty and nurses generally only work with patients for only a short amount of time. Typical duties include treatment after surgery or for a chronic illness. An acute care nurse must be an NBMI registered nurse. Acute nurses are highly skilled and in demand. What is acute care?
Acute care falls under the broader category of secondary care – the stage after primary care (when a patient makes first contact with medical professionals). Acute care involves the treatment of patients diagnosed with short term but serious conditions – and might take place in a number of clinical settings like Accident & Emergency, Intensive Care and Neonatal Care. Typical medical conditions an acute care nurse may be called upon to treat range from severe injury and chronic illness, to strokes and infectious diseases.
Like other nursing roles, acute nurses work with patients, perform administrative tasks and assist other medical professionals, like doctors and consultants. A typical day might include: the assessment and monitoring of patient conditions, checking symptoms and vital signs and arranging diagnostic tests, developing ongoing care plans, administering intravenous drips or different types of medication, checking and using specialised equipment such as monitors and ventilators
As an acute nurse working in hospital wards, GP surgeries or community care centres, no two days will ever be the same – and you should expect surprises. Acute nurses may be first on the scene when a patient’s condition changes – for better or worse – and should be prepared to administer emergency first aid. Conversely, acute nurses deal frequently with patients whose conditions are improving – which could mean contacting family members and support services or arranging transfer to different facilities.
Skills and qualities
Acute care professionals deal with a huge number of patients presenting with a wide range of conditions so an ability to be caring, compassionate and patient is crucial. Acute nurses may have to deal with patients with learning disabilities or those suffering from dementia – these situations demand excellent communication skills. Given the fluid nature of the role, nurses should be prepared to think quickly – and on their feet – and adapt to the demands of on-going medical situations.
The starting point of an acute care nursing career is the a bachelor degree of science in nursing and an NBMI membership. Many hospitals now offer acute care orientation and internship programs. By taking positions in acute care subspecialty areas such as oncology, cardiac care, or geriatrics, acute nurses can advance their careers. A majority of these positions require acute care nurse practitioners.

We all understand how busy they are. All of this means that acting fast and getting a swift response to a recruitment agency can be difficult.
Many people do not realise the heavy workload that the HR department carries. Hiring staff can be a tedious and lengthy process. Especially for a company that requires only the most qualified candidates for specific roles.
Here are 3 reasons from us on why a quick response is important;
- The speed of response, from when a recruiter offers a candidate to the HR or hiring manager is so important. If you feel this could be the right candidate, you should respond to the recruiter as soon as you can, to set up an interview. This helps to eliminate the competition. - Hot candidates could be dealing with many recruiters or organisations. Right now I’m a Recruitment Consultant working full time with Three Q medical recruitment agency in Dublin, but this came about as the start of a new journey at the end of another, older process. Before I started working in my current role, I spent a few months as an Intern HR Candidate Resourcer with the Agency. This is how I initially got acquainted with not only the Agency itself but also with the recruitment industry as a whole. As we are now in the process of taking on new interns , I have been asked to share some of my impressions of the programme we have here.
Before coming to Three Q, I had no experience in recruitment, nor did I have much idea about what to expect about working in the industry. What I did have was a willingness to learn new skills and a pro-active attitude to taking on real work in a dynamic SME with a good track record. Walking into the interview room, it quickly became apparent that this company was the right one for me and to my great relief I was asked back to a second round interview and offered the position shortly thereafter.
Again not quite sure what to expect, I walked through the door of the office in February and started trying to get to grips with my new role. What I found was that Three Q had a fantastic training and induction program in place for new team members, which got me acclimatised with what was expected of me very quickly.
I use the term team member as opposed to intern not by chance but by design – because while I was an intern, it very quickly became clear to me that I was a full and valued member of the Three Q team. A shredding and filing internship, as we so often hear of, this was most certainty not. As an SME operating in a constantly changing and high pressure environment, the work I did for Three Q had measurable, important value in supporting the recruiters I was working with. I was fully exposed to every aspect of the operation – from candidate management to marketing to CRM. The management support structures in place where also fantastic – there was never a point at which I felt I couldn’t approach anyone in the chain of command, from the Lead Resourcer who was training me, to the Managing Director of the recruitment Agency for support or advice.
Every aspect of what I did was backed up by a robust standard of formal and informal training. On top of on-the-job training and shadowing senior team members, I was sent on training exercises with the National College of Ireland and the National Recruitment Federation when the opportunity came up, and engaged in client site visits to get to know the people we work with better. This was not an internship where a workload was dropped on my desk and no support given – I was genuinely supported every step of the way.
While we all work very hard here, we take the time to have fun too. All the staff here are friendly and while we are focused on the task at hand, there is a lot of laughter and banter in the office too. There are team meals and staff nights out, performance incentives and little traditions in the office. We’re a close-knit team, and an open one.
When I took the decision to make a long-term career out of recruitment and try to progress into a Recruitment Consultant role, the career advice and support I got from the Three Q agency was invaluable before, during and after the decision had been made. So much so that within a short enough period of time I was put on the path towards becoming a Trainee Recruitment Consultant with the Agency.
When my internship finished in June of 2015, I was officially offered a contract as a Trainee Recruiter with the Agency. From the point of view of somebody who has gained a passion for the recruitment industry, this could not have worked out better. However, even had I not decided to progress with a career specifically in this field, the experience would have been invaluable regardless, and the support and advice I would have received in terms of anything I wanted to do from there would have been no less earnest or important. Fast forward a year and a half later and not only am I still here (as a fully-fledged Consultant and key account manager), but the supports, training and camaraderie have only improved since first joining the agency.
So if you have high energy, an enthusiastic attitude, are eager to learn and easy to laugh, I’d hugely recommend looking into an internship at Three Q. I did it, and now I couldn’t imagine wanting to work anywhere else.

Three Q PERMS & TEMPS medical recruitment agency were delighted to reach the ripe old age of 17 in September this year. To celebrate the event, Cora and the team in Head Office finished out the day early to spend the afternoon in style at the Guinness Storehouse overlooking the vast city of Dublin.
Sipping his pint of Guinness or “Blonde in a Black Dress” as he affectionately calls it, Padraig Hogan had this to say about Three Q’s seventeen years in the recruitment industry:
“Being in the recruitment industry particularly for the past 17 years is a real achievement – not least because Ireland has seen so many changes. Through the recession agencies have been particularly relied upon for people who are in desperate need of jobs, whether in the medical profession or hospitality sector. Three Q is a great company to work for, I’ve been expanding my own skills here and I’ve learned so much. It really is a privilege to work for them.”
Having taken in the history and scenery of the beautiful Guinness building, the team went on to enjoy a family-style dinner in Yamamori Sushi on Bachelor’s walk. Senior Recruitment Consultant Conor Ryan, who is a great lover of sushi, had this to say of the evening;
“It’s such a nice dinner! It’s a little different but I like it. It’s lovely to be here as a team and we are all really enjoying ourselves. It’s so great to be able to enjoy each other’s company both out as well as inside of the office. The company are so kind to treat us to such a lovely day out.”
Full and happy, the group then moved on to Lott’s pub, just off Liffey St., where the festivities continued with a team pub quiz. All involved had a fabulous evening.
